Here we are greeted not by cheerful hosts but by images of three awkward, vacant-looking women. Despite the title of this series, ‘The Sea of Tranquillity’, the women appear decidedly out of place. None of them look us directly in the eye.
Auckland-based photographer Yvonne Todd creates intentionally unsettling images that play on commercial studio portraiture. Her subjects usually appear in heavy make-up and prim clothing against a plain backdrop.
As Todd puts it, ‘The young women in these photographs are ... stifling in an oppressive environment that has the ... airless qualities of outer space.’
