Winifred Knights: The Marriage at Cana
Winifred Knights’ The Marriage at Cana is one of the treasures in Te Papa’s collection of early 20th-century British art. The work is inspired by religious imagery in Renaissance painting, and reimagines the biblical miracle of Jesus turning water into wine.
Knights painted the work in Italy in the early 1920s, after becoming the first woman to win a scholarship to the prestigious British School at Rome. The painting, with its complex composition and skilfully rendered figures, is one of her most significant works.
The Marriage at Cana is displayed in this exhibition alongside a selection of Knights’ meticulous preparatory drawings, offering a window onto her working methods and the layers of meaning within the painting.
