Ngati Toa Rangatira: He iti whetu | Ngati Toa portraits
02 Apr 2015 - 31 Jul 2016
Level 5, Te Papa
The images in this exhibition reflect personal encounters between Ngāti Toa Rangatira – a prominent tribe of the Wellington region – and Europeans. Most are from the mid 1800s, an era of change and conflict when Ngāti Toa struggled to retain their newly conquered lands in the face of British settlement.

Colonial surveyors, officials, and artists created most of the works – for posterity, and sometimes for profit. They are a window onto the past, and a celebration of whakapapa – of family connections.
