Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962) was never content to settle for the conventional, dedicating her life to experimentation in art.
Goncharova led Moscow’s avant-garde art scene in the first two decades of the 20th century, along with her lifetime companion Mikhail Larionov (1881-1964). Rejecting academic painting, she looked to Russian folk art, peasant life, and icon painting for inspiration, combining these elements into a unique form of modernism.
Today, Goncharova is recognised as among the most important artists of the early 20th century. Russian collectors, especially, fight to own her works. Te Papa’s remarkable collection of her paintings demonstrates some key moments in her career, giving us a sense of how her personal, lively forms of expression evolved.
