American Carleton Watkins was the foremost photographer of the San Francisco Bay Area during the mid to late 1800s. He is renowned for his pictures of the Yosemite area, and for the impact these had on perceptions of the Californian landscape.
Watkins’ images also set a standard for how other countries, including New Zealand, presented their progress and natural assets in photographs on the world stage.
These large-format ‘mammoth plate’ prints were acquired in 1888 by James Hector, director of the Colonial Museum, Te Papa’s first predecessor.
